Crystal Beer Parlor, Savannah, GA

We found the Crystal Beer Parlor on a rainy Sunday in Savannah, when a restaurant in the neighbourhood was closed.

It has a unique entrance and the insides have that old wood, well-used feel that brings comfort and familiarity in a place which has been around since the 1930’s.

Crab Stew with a sidecar of sherry. So good I forgot the sherry

After reading reviews, I chose the Crab Stew with a sidecar of sherry. It was so good I forgot the sherry. The soup hosted hunks of crab meat throughout in a chowder-ish sauce, but more buttery for a great dose of flavour.

We ordered our first-ever Fried Green Tomatoes in a tip of the hat to Southern tradition. Delicious, served with a mayonnaise-based sauce, even though the tomatoes were breaded with panko. Guessing this is non-traditional, so we’ll have to try them again.

Then came the warm peach cobbler: heavy on the peach and light on the cobbler, as I like it. With vanilla ice cream, all melty on top.
