La Belle et la Boeuf , Laval, Quebec

This lively burger bar restaurant on the promenade in Laval, outside of Montreal, has a great patio and engaging pop interior.

We were hungry, and the menu was inspirational.

Craig ordered the Pac Mac burger – where fried macaroni and cheese blocks are the buns for your hamburger. He tried, really tried, but could not finish it!

Viviana and I had the Calimero burger with fried egg, smoked bacon, smoked Gouda cheese, lettuce, crispy fried onion and spicy mayo. It was delicious and the egg was an unexpected, clever addition.

I’d been avoiding poutine for years since I knew I’d like it. It’s a low-cost upgrade here. So with a little peer pressure and a latent desire, I had my first, genuine Quebecois poutine – and of course it was delicious. The cheese curds melting into the gravy and fries – divine.

These are the kinds of meals to split unless you’re a big eater since it will satisfy two, easily. And if you’re up for the challenge, there are even larger burgers to order.

It’s a great location. Do check out the murals and hanging art – and don’t miss the bathrooms.

There are a handful of additional locations if you’re in another part of la belle province.
